Hey there! 👋 We’re a Chicago family of four + one very opinionated Belgian Malinois named Athena. We love hitting the road to explore rugged trails, quirky towns, and everything in between. Dog-friendly is a must, because let’s be real… we’re not leaving Athena behind.

She thinks she’s human, and trust me, her revenge would be legendary. Just kidding! She really is one of us. Also, she made me say that.

We’re not digital nomads or full-time travel peeps, so don’t go picturing us in a decked-out van sipping artisanal coffee at sunrise… yet. We’re just regular people squeezing family trips into real life.

Our vibe

We like rugged trails, quirky towns, and discovering weird roadside stops you’d never find in a guidebook.

We lean outdoorsy, with a little bit of off-roading fun (nothing too wild, although we DO have Imogene Pass under our belts!!! 🎉), but we do occasionally treat ourselves like fancy people.

Also, we homeschool—well, lifeschool—so travel often doubles as “education,” whether we planned it that way or not.

Camper life: our new road trip game changer

In 2024, we decided to go big, or should we say, go camper!!, to make our travels way easier and way more fun. The main reason? Athena, of course. 🐾 Tents weren’t cutting it anymore with our hairy menace in the mix, and finding dog-friendly places that aren’t weirdly outdated or wildly overpriced can feel like hunting for unicorns.

The best part? We’ve since parked ourselves in some jaw-dropping spots. And let’s be honest, a camper is way safer (and warmer) than a tent. (10/10 no regrets.)

Chief planner, blog writer, video editor, chaos wrangler. I’m the one behind this blog—born and raised in Prague, now making magic (and spreadsheets) behind the scenes. Because I’m a notorious juggler of many hats, you can also find me over on another blog I run, focused on non-toxic living, but that’s a whole other adventure! 😉

Dad 🛠️

Filip

Road navigator, gear hauler, and occasional forgetter of essential items. Once left our sleeping mats behind on a cross-country road trip. Or maybe twice—who’s counting? (We are. We definitely are.) He’s an excellent driver, and as a car tech, the reason our ride usually doesn’t fall apart halfway through Wyoming. 😅 Also born and raised in the Czech Republic, and totally obsessed with bikes. If there’s a trail worth pedaling, he’s already Googled it, mapped it, and possibly added it to our itinerary without telling anyone.

Tween 🐑

Ella

Our gentle-hearted animal whisperer. She has a deep love for sheep, horses, goats, quokkas—really, anything with a heartbeat. Fluent in kindness and currently learning French and Japanese. One day, she just might run an animal sanctuary in the French countryside… with a tiny matcha café tucked in on the side. Not a fan of hot weather, so if the sun’s blazing, you’ll find her in the shade with a critter and a good book. ☀️

Teen🤯

Mia

Fierce, driven, and expert in backseat negotiations. Goes after her goals with laser focus and pity the poor soul who stands in her way. She’s our resident idea machine on how to live a life, fluent in sarcasm, quick with comebacks, and always keeping us guessing with the teen tongue. Obsessed with all things Korean, she’s already studying Korean at a college—at fifteen. 🎓 We’re just trying to keep up, really.

Security 🐾

CEO of Treat Expectations. Full-time fun supervisor. Part-time shedder. Mind reader. 🧠 100% believes this blog is about her. Also head of security. If it moves, breathes, or even thinks about approaching our shadows, she’s on it. Nothing gets past those ears. 👂
